This aggressive policy shift has drawn sharp criticism from Canadian officials and business leaders who see it as an unjustified economic attack on a key trading partner.
Trump’s move, framed as part of a broader strategy to boost American manufacturing and curb trade deficits, is being met with growing disdain north of the border. Canadian Trade Minister Mélanie Joly described the tariffs as “an economic slap in the face to a neighbor and ally.” Economists warn the impact could be significant, particularly on the agricultural, lumber, and automotive sectors, which depend heavily on cross-border trade.
“Punitive tariffs of this magnitude will disrupt supply chains, raise consumer prices, and strain a relationship that took decades to build,” said Mark Emerson, a senior analyst at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
Canadians, known for their typically mild diplomatic tone, are increasingly vocal. Social media in Canada has erupted with calls for reciprocal action and boycotts of American goods. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not yet announced a formal response but emphasized that “Canada will always defend its workers and industries from unfair treatment.”
