Known to fans as “The Shred Demon,” Shankle made the announcement earlier today via a heartfelt video posted on his official social media accounts. The video, just under five minutes long, features Shankle speaking directly to his fans, visibly emotional, as he thanked them for decades of support.
“I never thought I’d say this, but the time has come,” Shankle said. “After much thought and soul-searching, I’ve decided to step away from music — not just performing, but the industry entirely.”
A Shocking Decision
David Shankle joined Manowar in 1989, appearing on their 1992 album The Triumph of Steel, where his technically complex guitar work left a lasting mark on fans and critics alike. After parting ways with the band in the mid-1990s, he continued to make music with his own project, the David Shankle Group, earning respect for his virtuosic style and passion for teaching young musicians.
For many fans, this news is especially shocking given Shankle’s recent activity. He had been teasing new music earlier this year, and was scheduled to appear at several guitar clinics and festivals in the summer of 2025.
Why He’s Retiring
Though Shankle did not go into extensive detail, he cited health concerns and a desire to focus on personal well-being and family life as the main reasons behind his decision.
“There are things going on behind the scenes that I’ve kept private,” he said. “But right now, I need to focus on my health and the people I love. Music has been my life, but it’s time for a new chapter.”
Sources close to Shankle have confirmed that he has been dealing with ongoing physical ailments that have made touring and long studio sessions increasingly difficult.
Fans React
Tributes, thank-you messages, and emotional reactions flooded social media within minutes of the announcement. Fellow musicians, fans, and longtime collaborators expressed their support and gratitude for Shankle’s contributions to the metal genre.
“David is a legend,” said Ross “The Boss” Friedman, another former Manowar guitarist. “His legacy will live on, and I wish him all the best in whatever comes next.”
Fans have already begun organizing online tribute events and sharing memories of Shankle’s iconic performances and masterclasses.
What’s Next?
While he’s stepping away from the spotlight, Shankle hinted that he may remain involved in music in other ways — possibly mentoring young guitarists or making occasional guest appearances.
“I’m not disappearing. I’m just shifting gears,” he said with a smile.
