  • Four-star linebacker Elijah Newby has officially committed to the University of Southern California (USC), solidifying his place as a key addition to the Trojansโ€™ 2025 recruiting class. The highly rated defensive prospect, who had received offers from several top-tier programs including Michigan, Penn State, Alabama, and Oregon, explained that his choice was based on a combination of trust, vision, and personal fit.

Newby stated that USCโ€™s coaching staff played a major role in helping him make the decision. He pointed to head coach Lincoln Riley and defensive coordinator Dโ€™Anton Lynn as influential figures who provided a clear and realistic developmental plan. According to Newby, what stood out was not just the promise of playing time but the genuine belief the staff showed in his potential and leadership ability. He said the coaches gave him a strong sense of confidence about the direction of the program and how he would be used within their defensive system.

The linebacker, who stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 215 pounds, has built a reputation for his sideline-to-sideline quickness, sharp instincts, and tackling discipline. Analysts project him as a high-impact player who could compete for early playing time due to his speed and football intelligence. Newby noted that USCโ€™s defensive scheme fits his style of play and that the programโ€™s recent defensive adjustments made it an even more appealing destination.

Family and academics also factored into the decision. Newby said his parents were impressed with USCโ€™s support system for student-athletes, particularly in balancing athletic and academic responsibilities. He emphasized that choosing USC wasnโ€™t only about footballโ€”it was about setting himself up for success on and off the field.

He also revealed plans to graduate from high school early and enroll at USC in January, giving him the opportunity to participate in spring practices and adjust to college-level training ahead of the fall season. This move is often encouraged for top recruits seeking to make an early impact.
